Buying Organic Food Locally

Shopping for organic food can be a bit overwhelming. Just finding a store that sells a wide variety of organic products can be a hassle, not to mention finding organic food for a decent price. So I made it my mission to visit five local grocery stores that are known for their organic selection and compare the prices on some of my most purchased items. I also compared these prices to what it would cost to purchase the food straight from the local farms in my area.

All of the prices listed below are for food that are advertised as USDA Certified Organic. There are a couple of items that I noted are sold as "all natural". Now what "all natural" means is not regulated and can have a multitude of meanings. However I thought it would be convenient to list what the prices are to compare. As I do sometimes go for the "all natural" over the organic if the budget is tight.

Prices that have an * next to them denote that the product is Certified Naturally Grown. Check out the Naturally Grown website for more information.

Now, keep in mind that these are the regular prices for my local area. Pricing can fluctuate depending on multiple factors including local economy, weather, sales and the current season. Prices and products available can even be different from the same store in different parts of town. Kroger on one side of town may have organic honeydew, but Kroger on the other side of town never does!

The information listed under "local farms" comes from Augusta Locally Grown, a wonderful organization that compiles the current local prices from our local farms all in one location. If you are in the CSRA area I highly recommend you check out their service!

Blank spots on the chart may mean that the supplier is currently not carrying that particular item at the moment, or that they don't carry that item at all.

I will do my best to keep these prices as up to date as possible. But, I am only one woman and prices can change quickly. So think of this as an overall helpful guide. These prices are in no way guaranteed ever, anywhere at any time.
