Apple Sport Drink

Homemade Apple Sports Drink

Making a refreshing, hydrating sports drink at home is much easier than one would think and it only takes two ingredients! No added sugar, no artificial dyes and all of the nutrition! Throw it together in the morning, let simmer long and slow all day and then enjoy! Simple enough!

This recipe yields about 50 oz.

I always save my apple peels and cores in plastic bags in my freezer. They make the most delicious apple juice and I highly recommend that everyone does this when they eat apples. Not only does it use something you would normally just toss, but it saves money as well!

For this recipe I used all of the apple scraps I had stored in the freezer. I am not sure of the exact amount, but it filled my stockpot.

If you are using whole apples, I would use about ten for this recipe. Cut the apples into quarters. You can use the entire apple: peel, stem, seeds, all of it! Feel free to buy the uglier ones at the store.

The second ingredient is organic pure coconut water. Easily found at most grocery stores, you can buy these in smaller sizes, or by the quart (as shown above).

Place the apples and a quart of coconut water in the pot and bring to a boil.

Once the pot comes to a boil, cover with a lid and turn down the hit to simmer. Leave on the stove for ten hours. I then turn off the heat and let it cool a bit. I then throw the whole pot in the refrigerator to cool over night. You can skip this step if you don't mind handling hot juice.

Once cooled to a temperate comfortable for handling, strain the juice. You can use a fine mesh strainer, or you can use cheese cloth. If you use a strainer, push the apple cores and peels against the strainer with a spoon to get the most liquid out as possible. I used a cheese cloth and squeezed the pulp for every drop it would give. I ended up with about 52 ounces of juice. If you plan on drinking soon you can store in the refrigerator. You can also freeze some for later use. It's great to thin out purees!
